As far as we know, there’s almost no such thing as effortless beauty. From facial treatments that leave your complexion dewy and luminous to the perfect winged eyeliner, experts reveal their most-trusted, insider hacks for CR‘s series, Beauty Secrets.
Clad in a statement-making Valentino gown in a nod to Judy Garland, Lady Gaga recently picked up the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. In addition to nabbing the accolade for her work in A Star is Born, the songstress also nailed one of the most memorable red carpet looks of the ceremony. While it was a far cry from her more daring early career ensembles (see: her infamous meat dress from the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards), Gaga decided to sport a voluminous lilac gown and light blue hair to match.
“It was both of our idea to make her hair blue,” Frederic Aspiras, her hairstylist, tells CR. “I really wanted to put the true ‘Gaga’ touch in the look. What better way to do that than with color in the hair?”
Aspiras moved to Los Angeles back in 2004 to pursue a career in hair and met Gaga around the time she released her debut album, The Fame. Since November 2009, Aspiras has been creating some of her most avant garde and glamorous looks, from fishtail braids at the Grammys to a wig made entirely out of human hair and multi-colored fiber optics. Here, CR caught up with the hair expert about his hair must-haves and what trend he’d like to see disappear in 2019.
What are your favorite haircare products?
“I am a huge fan of the Joico Blonde Life products, especially their shampoo, conditioner, and enhancer spray. I also love the GHD Platinum Plus Flat Iron. Epona Valley makes such chic and sexy hair accessories and Nigel’s Hair pins are definitely the strongest out there.”
Do you have a favorite look you’ve done for Gaga?
“One of my favorite looks we’ve done was for the Grammys in 2018. I did double fishtail braids that were then braided into one larger fishtail braid. I think it looked very cool and unique.”
What hair trends do you want to see for 2019?
“I want to see color tints thought the hair: glowing and translucent tones of pink, blue, purple, red, or anything! Whatever sets your look apart and accents your personality. Last year, I saw more and more women buying and wearing high-quality human hair wigs. It allows them to experiment with colors and styles that they might not do with their own hair. I expect to see people bringing their wigs into the salon to have them colored or cut becoming more common. I also want to see pure elegance in everyday hair looks, like how women wore their hair back in the ’40s and ’50s. The days of glamour, but worn in a more modern and simple way.”
What about trends you’d like to see go away?
“High ponytails. I think we should evolve the ponytail, especially if it’s worn for an event. Also, the ‘lob’ or ‘long bob.’ If you want to cut your hair short, just go for it! There are so many interesting and cool bob shapes, like the Vidal Bob or the Shaggy Bob.”
How would you summarize your own aesthetic?
