The world of beauty is booming with celebrity endorsed lines like Claudia Schiffer‘s, the every-growing Kardashian empire, and of course Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty. But could Jil Sander—the legendary designer who defined luxury minimalism in the 1980s and 90’s—be throwing her hat into the ring? In a recent interview about her new retrospective at the Museum of Applied Arts in Frankfurt, the designer hinted she “would be interested in doing an extremely effective beauty line.”
The timing could not be more perfect. The prevailing trend in makeup at the moment seems to be maximalism—which has best been promoted by Kim and Kylie, who favor contouring and extensive palates. While the maximalist look is very popular on Instagram, there seems to be a growing number of consumers who are looking for easy, natural looks, turning to brands like Glossier and products that promote skin care rather than concealment. Anyone who knows even a passing bit about Sander’s aesthetic would assume that she would go the minimalist route, offering perhaps only a range of fuss-free essentials in incredibly chic packaging.
What is perhaps most interesting about this potential new venture would be that it would mirror the designer’s legacy in fashion. She made a name for herself going against the over-the-top trends of the 80’s with a pared-down timeless look that was fresh, and became a staple of the the next decade. There is a chance she could usher in the same upheaval in the world of makeup.
Fans shouldn’t get too excited yet, as no official announcement has been made. But it certainly seems like Sander is very seriously considering the new venture. “I’ve already had several discussions, but I’m very careful and very sensitive today to use my time in a good way,” she said. “When you do something it has to fit, and I’m in the position where I can choose and that’s quite a good point.” Whenever Sander decides to dip her toes into the world of beauty, we’ll be ready.
