On the most intensely hot June day, Prada gave us a preview of its latest chapter of La Femme Prada Intense and L’Homme Prada Intense fragrances, which first launched in 2016. Like the originals, the two new scents have been designed by perfumier Daniela Andrier and Miuccia Prada to be a sensual meeting point for female and male fragrances. In a market where blue bottles are for boys and pink ones are for girls, Mrs. Prada has been defying gender fluidity through fashion and scent long before it became fashionable to do so. The Steven Meisel-lensed campaign for Prada Intense is fronted by Mia Goth, Mia Wasikowska, Ansel Elgort, and Dane Dehaan.
Following the event, I was able to catch Goth as she was checking out of her New York hotel room. She’s drawn to the ambiguity of both scents. “What I have noticed is that Prada really loves to play on contradictions,” Goth says. “We are all very much multi-faceted, complex people. We have both masculine and a feminine sides to us. It’s about finding the truth somewhere in the middle of these gender roles that are becoming far less relevant and less defined. What matters is that we’re individuals.”
As far as bottling individuality goes, Intense does its best to sit apart from the rest of the Prada perfumes, some of which are lighter and more powdery. La Femme Prada Intense starts with Tuberose that gets magnified by smoother and spicier notes. L’Homme Prada Intense starts with Amber and Patchouli at the heart (atypical for a men’s fragrance) that then crosses paths with a flowery hint of Iris.
As different as they are, the bottles are meant to compliment, not contrast one another. “We are two parts of the same whole,” Goth explains. “We all have dreams and feelings. We all aspire to something. We all have fears. We all have a history. If you look at the bottles’ architecture, La Femme Prada and Homme is a celebration of that. The perfume also smells really great, so it’s nice to be behind something that is so classy and elegant—it’s something that I’m drawn to anyways.” Goth credits Prada’s elite hair and makeup team—Guido Palau and Pat McGrath respectively—with helping her ease into the role as the campaign’s face. “Being an actress, I’m able to use the tools around me to become someone else.”
Aside from her latest role with Prada, Goth will star in two upcoming films in 2017, Suspiria and Marrowbone. And another film in 2018 called High Life sees the actress stuck beyond the solar system alongside Robert Pattinson on a mission to test human reproduction in outer space. I wonder if perfume smells differently in space?
La Femme Prada Intense and L’Homme Prada Intense will be available on June 17th starting at .END
